The Group Refet Janitez, a women-led charity foundation dedicated to community service, has intensified its humanitarian efforts since its inception in 2022.

The organisation, which began full-scale operations in 2023, has successfully implemented several charitable initiatives, including providing support to hospitals, inmates at the Gambia Prison Services and other vulnerable communities across the Greater Banjul Area.

Speaking to The Point, Mrs. Aja Fanta Badjie, president of the foundation, gave a detailed account of activities of the group since its inception and the impact it has been making on the lives and livelihoods of people in local communities.

“Our first major activity in 2023 was the distribution of hand sanitizers, adult diapers, sweets, and cornflakes. These items were donated by a family member residing in the United States, and we ensured they reached hospitals in need.” she explained.

In addition to providing healthcare supplies, Badjie noted that the group also participated in Ramadan Iftar meals distribution, which she said, is an annual tradition.

She pointed out that funding for this initiative was generated through contributions from members. “We organised Iftar events in Brikama and Kanifing Municipality to support the community.”

The group, she recalled, also staged a fundraising event in March 2023, the proceeds of which were spent on charitable causes.

Beneficiaries included the Gambia Prison Services, Tanka Tanka Psychiatric Hospital, health facilities and religious schools (madrasas) in Brikama.

In addition, she said donations were made to the Brikama Mortuary.

Beyond charity, the president said the foundation has taken a significant step in empowering its members economically. With a membership of 250 active women across KM and West Coast Region, the group provides interest-free loans to support small-scale businesses.

“In the West Coast, members receive up to D50,000 as a loan repayable in six months, while in KM, due to a larger membership base, loans are capped at D30,000. Borrowers get a one-month grace period before starting repayments.”

A minimal D1,000 documentation fee is charged, and so far, the repayment rate has been perfect.

To sustain and expand its initiatives, the group has announced an upcoming fundraising event, with top Senegalese mbalax sensation- Aida Samba, scheduled for February 7th 2025 at Penchami Hall.

“Proceeds from this event will be directed towards the same causes as we have been supporting, Ramadan Iftar, hospital donations, The Gambia Prisons Department and local Madrasas.”

Astou Faye, a member of the foundation, also shared some of the foundation’s contributions towards its active members and other entities.

She, further emphasised that their contributions support women, regardless of their status in society so that they could stand firm for themselves and help their families as well.
