The outreach programme was held in Missiranding on 14 September 2026 and Nuimi Berending on 15 September 2026, bringing together community leaders and residents to discuss border security challenges and the critical role communities can play in addressing them.
According to the Immigration Department, the engagement was designed to increase public awareness of the BPU's presence and mandate, while strengthening collaboration between border communities and law enforcement in tackling irregular migration, smuggling and other cross-border crimes.
Speaking during the sensitisation sessions, Assistant Immigration Control Officer Musa Mboob outlined the functions of the Border Patrol Unit, describing it as a newly established unit within the Gambia Immigration Department tasked with enhancing border security.
He highlighted the dangers associated with irregular migration and expressed concern over the harbouring of irregular migrants and the involvement of some individuals in activities that facilitate unlawful migration.
The programme also provided an opportunity for community leaders to reaffirm their commitment to supporting the department's efforts.
The Alkalo of Missiranding, Bakai Manneh, and the Alkalo of Nuimi Berending, Buba Sally Sonko, commended the initiative and assured officials of their communities' readiness to work closely with the Border Patrol Unit in curbing irregular migration and related crimes.
Meanwhile, Assistant Immigration Control Officer Dawda Colley and Immigration Officer Lamin Sambou underscored the importance of community vigilance in maintaining safety and security.
They urged parents, youth and community members to remain alert and promptly report activities linked to irregular migration and other unlawful practices to the relevant authorities.
The Gambia Immigration Department reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening partnerships with communities and other stakeholders as part of ongoing efforts to combat irregular migration, enhance border security and promote safe and regular migration within and beyond The Gambia.
