The Gambia Trade Union Bureau (GAMTUB) has strongly condemned the National Assembly’s failure to pass the amended draft constitution of the Third Republic, calling it ‘a betrayal of the Gambian people’s aspirations for democracy and good governance.’

In a statement issued recently, Kebba Masaneh Ceesay, chairman of GAMTUB, expressed deep disappointment over the National Assembly’s rejection of the revised draft constitution.

Speaking on the country’s organised labour force, Ceesay said the decision was “deeply regrettable” and marked “a significant setback” in The Gambia’s democratic journey.

“This amended draft constitution represents the hopes of Gambians for a just and inclusive legal foundation that upholds the principles of equality, rule of law, and national development,” Ceesay stated.

“Its rejection undermines the democratic progress made since 2016 and disregards the will of the people.”

Ceesay also emphasised that the workers of The Gambia, represented by GAMTUB, remain committed to the establishment of a people-centered constitution that protects the rights of all citizens.

Thus, he urged President Adama Barrow to take leadership in resolving the political impasse and to consider all lawful and constitutional means to move the reform process forward.

In view of this, GAMTUB is calling on the president to convene a National Conference that will bring together workers, civil society, senior citizens, and other key stakeholders to ensure inclusivity, transparency, and national consensus in drafting a new constitution.

“We believe the time has come for a broad-based national dialogue. The voices of the people must guide our constitutional future not partisan interests,” the chairman stressed.

In the same statement, GAMTUB called on National Assembly Members to set aside political affiliations and work in the best interest of the country.

“The Gambia is bigger than any one party or ideology,” Ceesay added.

“We urge our elected representatives to prioritize national unity and democratic advancement.”

Reaffirming his union’s stance, Ceesay expressed the union’s unwavering solidarity with the Gambian people and the broader push for democratic reform.

“We remain resolute in our advocacy for a constitution that reflects the will and dignity of every Gambian. This is our homeland, and we must protect its future.”
