The highly competitive programme was organised by the Department of Community Medicine and the School of Public Health at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) under the sponsorship of the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC), a flagship capacity-building initiative of the Government of India.
Sanneh outperformed 45 public health professionals from 24 countries across four continents to emerge as the overall best participant. The award recognises exceptional leadership potential, academic excellence, innovation, teamwork, and commitment to strengthening public health systems.
Describing the honour as both humbling and inspiring, Sanneh said representing The Gambia at such a respected international platform and emerging as the top participant is a moment he will always cherish.
“This recognition reflects the strong institutional support I have received from NaNA and the collective commitment of Gambian public health professionals,” he stated.
The IPHMDP is designed to strengthen leadership and management capacity among mid-career public health professionals, with focus areas including health systems strengthening, strategic planning, monitoring and evaluation, and evidence-based decision-making; approaches that will directly enhance nutrition programming and service delivery in The Gambia. He dedicated the award to the entire NaNA team, his family, and all Gambians working to improve national health outcomes.
His achievement not only brings pride to the country but also signals The Gambia’s growing footprint in global public health leadership and capacity development
