The Republic of Korea and The Gambia have commemorated 60 years of robust bilateral relations with a symbolic and spirited celebration at the Ebujan Theatre in Banjul. The event highlighted the depth of cooperation between the two nations, spanning agriculture, education, transitional justice, and other key sectors that have shaped The Gambia’s development journey.

Guests were treated to a captivating display of Korean cultural performances, showcasing the richness of Korea’s heritage through music, dance, and traditional artistry. The evening served not only as a tribute to six decades of diplomatic ties but also a reaffirmation of the shared values and mutual respect that continue to bind the two countries.

The cultural performances by the Korean delegation who travelled all the way from the Republic of Korea, deeply moved the invited guests. Many were seen capturing the moment on their phones, eager to preserve the vibrant scenes unfolding before them.

It was more than entertainment; it was a heartfelt demonstration of friendship and brotherhood between the two nations. The guests weren’t merely passive listeners to speeches, they were swept up in the rhythm and spirit of the musical displays, drawn into a shared experience that resonated far beyond the theatre walls.

The Ebujan Theatre was filled to capacity as a mesmerising cultural performance, predominantly led by female artists dressed in striking red and white attire, took centre stage and captivated the audience with grace and energy.

The guests were visibly moved, smiling and applauding throughout. Beyond the brilliance of the performance, several attendees expressed that such cultural exchanges should become a regular feature between the two friendly nations—celebrating not only diplomacy but the deep human connection that binds The Gambia and the Republic of Korea.

For many, it was a moment that will linger in memory for years to come, a celebration not just of diplomatic ties, but of genuine human connection.

Speaking at the event, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, Hon. Serign Modou Njie, remarked:

“This 60th anniversary is not only a celebration of history, it is a reaffirmation of the shared values that have guided our cooperation over the decades: respect for sovereignty, a commitment to peace, sustainable development, and a belief in the power of partnership.”

He continued, “Over the past six decades, our two countries have built and consolidated a strong bilateral relationship anchored on mutual respect, trust, hope, and shared benefit. We are united by common values, justice, peace, and accountability for all, irrespective of colour, religious belief, or nationality.”

Minister Njie expressed deep appreciation for Korea’s enduring support, noting, “The Government of The Gambia deeply values the assistance provided by the Republic of Korea throughout this period of partnership. Your country’s contributions have had a tangible and positive impact on the lives and livelihoods of Gambians, improving living conditions and contributing significantly to our socio-economic development.”

He further highlighted Korea’s alignment with The Gambia’s national priorities, particularly the objectives of the National Development Plan, which aims to drive inclusive growth and serve as a catalyst for sustainable development.

“We greatly value your interventions in critical sectors such as agriculture, especially rice production, education, capacity building, and the important Transitional Justice process, through support to the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund. This contribution has made a meaningful difference in our national efforts toward truth, reconciliation, and democratic consolidation.”

Hyuk-Woon Kwon, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea in Senegal, also addressed the gathering, reflecting on the strength of the bilateral relationship:

“Over the last six decades, Korea and The Gambia have built a close relationship founded on mutual respect, peace, and democracy. Korea has consistently supported The Gambia’s peacebuilding and transitional justice efforts. We hope to continue this partnership as The Gambia works toward lasting peace and sustainable development.”

He highlighted Korea’s investment in human capital, noting, “Korea is proud to support The Gambia’s dedicated efforts to invest in its people. For example, the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), in partnership with UNESCO, launched a vocational training programme that has expanded educational and employment opportunities for young Gambians.”

Ambassador Kwon also spoke on food security initiatives: “Last August, the Korea Rural Community Corporation (KRC) held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Rice Seed Cultivation Complex Project. We are confident this project, along with the ongoing work of the Korea Partnership for Innovation in Agriculture (KOPIA), will successfully implement the K-Ricebelt Initiative. We hope it will meaningfully contribute to strengthening food security in The Gambia.”

He added, “I am pleased that representatives from KOICA, KRC, and KOPIA are also here with us tonight. Today’s performance is a meaningful opportunity to further strengthen the ties between our two countries. Though geographically distant, Korea and The Gambia share many similarities. Both nations have long valued music and dance as vital parts of our communities and traditions. These cultural exchanges will enhance our friendship and broaden the horizons of future cooperation.”

Muhammed Jah, the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Korea in The Gambia, offered a heartfelt reflection on the relationship:

“It is a profound privilege to witness the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between our countries, a relationship built on cooperation across various sectors. Sixty years is a significant milestone in diplomacy; it signifies trust, mutual respect, and I dare say, a sense of family.”

Mr Jah expressed gratitude for Korea’s decision to host the celebration in The Gambia, saying, “Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1965, Korea has stood shoulder to shoulder with The Gambia, supporting our nation in peacebuilding, development, and beyond. In return, The Gambia has embraced the Republic of Korea as a true friend and partner.”

Reflecting on his role, he added, “As Honorary Consul, I have the privilege of witnessing this relationship flourish, not merely in official documents, but in real-life impact. From farmers adopting new techniques to students gaining opportunities in Korea, the partnership continues to touch lives in meaningful ways.”
