Fulbe Africa intensifies preparations

Preparations are gathering pace for the 2026 Fulbe Africa Anniversary as the organisation's executive members meet with regional authorities and local organisers in Basse to finalise arrangements for what is expected to be one of the largest celebrations of Fulani culture and heritage in The Gambia.

Scheduled for 26 December under the theme, "Empowering Pastoral Communities, Preserving Fulbe Heritage and Shaping the Future of Nomadism," the event is expected to attract hundreds of participants from across the country and the wider sub-region.

The two-day event, popularly known as "HikkaKo Basse", will begin with a conference bringing together scholars, policymakers, community leaders and development stakeholders to discuss key issues affecting pastoral communities. Deliberations will focus on peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders, social cohesion and sustainable solutions to challenges facing pastoral livelihoods.

The second day will feature cultural displays showcasing Fulani traditions through music, dance, traditional attire and indigenous practices. Organisers say the celebration aims to preserve and promote Fulani heritage while strengthening unity and mutual understanding among communities.

Speaking during a meeting with the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Fulbe Africa Secretary General Omar Bah described the anniversary as an important platform for dialogue and cultural preservation. He emphasised the need to encourage peaceful coexistence among farming and pastoral communities and reaffirmed the organisation's commitment to ensuring a successful event.

LOC Chairperson Omar Sompo Ceesay thanked Fulbe Africa for selecting the Upper River Region as host and assured organisers of the committee's readiness to deliver a successful celebration. He disclosed that a dedicated committee had already been established and would work closely with Fulbe Africa on planning and resource mobilisation efforts.

During a courtesy call, Governor Samba Bah welcomed the decision to host the anniversary in the region and pledged his administration's support. He expressed confidence that this year's edition would surpass previous celebrations held in the region.

"We will build on the successes of previous events and ensure this year's celebration is even better. The region will not associate itself with failure," Governor Bah stated.

The meeting concluded with both Fulbe Africa and the Local Organising Committee reaffirming their commitment to close collaboration to ensure the successful hosting of the anniversary, which is expected to celebrate Fulani culture, strengthen community ties and promote dialogue on issues affecting pastoral communities.
