The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Thursday held a day’s session for female politicians from various political parties in the country on gender inclusion.

The move forms part of activitities commemorating the International Women’s Day. The event was aimed at deepening democracy and good governance in The Gambia.

At the event,  Her Excellency Miatta L. French, ECOWAS Resident Representative in The Gambia, said she has been in The Gambia studying the situation but one problem she realised  in the country is women inclusion in governance.

“This is why I came up with this initiative as we celebrate women and make sure we create awareness to make sure they get started for the next election cycle as soon as possible.”

She pointed out that ECOWAS has more support in store for women in politics and the entire Gambian electoral process to continue to encourage women participation in taking leadership roles in governance.

Awa Bah, Desk Officer Women Branch at Inter-Party Committee (IPC), revealed that the initiative seeks to raise the confidence and awareness of women and the need to take leadership positions in politics.

She thus urged male politicians to give chance to the womenfolks when there are opportunities.

“When it is tough women take the frontline thus, when there are good opportunities they should be given the chances to enjoy the fruits of their labor.”

Also speaking, Musu Drammeh, Co-Chair Women IPC Branch, called on women to build their capacities in anyway they could to prepare themselves better for the upcoming electoral cycle.

She also called on women from different parties to join forces and help each dominate the political space in the leadership positions.
