Today, a delegation from Banjul City Council, headed by Deputy Mayor Abdou Aziz Dabakh Gaye, was warmly welcomed in our sister city, Ostend, Belgium.

The delegation, which includes Ward Councillors Bintou S.M. Jaiteh (Campama), Tunko Jammeh (Soldier Town), Abdoulie Boss Gaye (Portuguese Town), and Momodou Bah (Half Die Ward), along with City Link Coordinator Ousman Jobe, arrived in Ostend for a week-long visit aimed at strengthening ties and exchanging valuable knowledge and experiences.

The delegation was honored to be joined by the Gambian Ambassador to Belgium, His Excellency Pa Musa Jobarteh and the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Gambia for the Flemish Region, Mr. Peter De Roo, who participated in the official welcome ceremony at the Ostend Town Hall.

During the official welcome, Deputy Mayor Gaye delivered a speech on behalf of the Mayoress and the entire Banjul City Council. He highlighted the unique and enduring relationship between Banjul and Ostend, emphasising how the partnership has positively impacted thousands of lives in both cities.

“Despite the physical distance, our shared experiences as small coastal cities have created a strong bond of cooperation and mutual respect.”

“Partnerships like ours are more than just symbolic gestures; they are the foundation of progress. By working together, we combine our strengths and address our challenges collectively, building a future that benefits not just our cities, but the generations to come. In unity, we find strength, and in collaboration, we unlock new possibilities.” deputy Mayor said

As part of the visit, the Deputy Mayor had the honor of signing the ‘Golden Book’ of Ostend, further solidifying the deep bond between our two cities.

In the coming days, the Banjul delegation will engage in productive discussions with various city departments and organisations in Ostend.

The program includes meetings with the College of Mayor and Aldermen and the City Council, where the focus will be on sharing best practices and exploring new opportunities for collaboration.

The visit is part of an ongoing partnership supported by a European project grant of 3 million euros, awarded in 2019. This grant has enabled Banjul City Council to make significant advancements in urban policies related to greening, waste management, and sustainable development. The continued exchange of ideas and experiences is crucial as we work together to shape a brighter future for both our cities.
