Sharon L. Cromer was speaking on Tuesday at the official launch of the new educational centre dubbed - American Corner situated at Fajara, next to the Tropics Hotel.
The new American Corner is aimed to creating a hub for valuable information, education and cultural exchange with further objectives of transforming the American Corner into a vibrant space, where the public, especially students and teachers can access a wide range of resources, programs and events.
“These centres offer free access to many resources, allowing people to study about American history and culture, develop new skills and explore a vast spectrum of topics. They are the doors to America, providing a welcome invitation to learn, grow and engage.” she said.
“The Fajara American Corner will be a space where Gambians can explore American literature, history, and culture through books, films, and interactive activities.” she added.
She added that it will be a place for workshops, lectures and events that foster understanding, tolerance and appreciation of both our similarities and differences.
“We also want to encourage Gambian entrepreneurs to use this corner to collaborate and build the dreams that advance economic development,” she stressed.
She expressed optimism that the new corner would be a place where new ideas incubate, thus encouraging women and young entrepreneurs to collaborate and innovate.
The US diplomat acknowledged that Fajara American Corner complements their American Corner in Bundung, which she said, continues to thrive thanks to their partnership with Africell.
To this end, Ambassador Cromer applauded Comium for providing the former American Corner space in Pipeline for over 13 years, saying through their partnership with the latter, American Corner programs grew thus enabling many young Gambians to understand American culture and history.
