The vice president of The Gambia, Muhammed B.S. Jallow, has urged for transparency and accountability as he launched the Empowerment and Economic Development Project The Gambia 2025 worth approximately USD2 million. He added that the aid should reach the right people.

The project is initiated by the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) in collaboration with Qatar Charity Organisation in The Gambia. It’s aim to extend aid to vulnerable groups and disaster affected people in the country.

“There should be a monitoring mechanism to evaluate the effectiveness and impact of the support, ensuring transparency and accountability in all initiatives,” VP Jallow said.

“All activities under this collaboration align explicitly with our national development priorities while simultaneously contributing to the broader Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”

Last year, the NDMA reported that more than 70,000 individuals were impacted by adverse events such as flash floods, windstorms, and fire outbreaks, highlighting the urgent need for sustained humanitarian efforts.

“Thus, this aid came at a right time as our nation is still grappling with the aftermath of recent disasters that have disproportionately affected our communities, significantly exacerbating their vulnerabilities,” he reiterated.

Mustafa Es Satte, director of Qatar Charity Organization in The Gambia, said the project estimate at approximately USD2 million aims to improve the living conditions of the needy group to our sisterly country. “This is project is a gift to the Gambia as an expression of the deep relationship that binds the two countries.”

He explained that “Qatar Charity is a leading humanitarian and development organization committed to transforming lives through sustainable interventions worldwide. With technical expertise and collaborative approach, we develop partnerships that create lasting positive changes in vulnerable communities.”

He calls for continuous collaboration and assured their support to The Gambia.

Mr Sanna Dahaba, the Executive Director of NDMA, said “this collaborative effort highlights a shared commitment to alleviating suffering and enhancing resilience among vulnerable communities.”

“Each year, Qatar Charity consistently reaches out to the NDMA, supplying essential food and non-food items aimed at alleviating the hardships faced by households impacted by disasters across the country.  These efforts are vital, as they do not only provide immediate relief but also reinforce the belief that collaboration is essential, especially when the government alone cannot comprehensively address these challenges.”

He expressed gratitude to the Qatar Charity Organisation and all our partners for their steadfast collaboration and invaluable partnership in this endeavour.
