The Seyfo of Upper Niumi, Momodou Chatty Cham, has appealed to President Adama Barrow to increase the producer price of groundnuts ahead of this year's harvest, saying farmers are expecting a bumper harvest.
Speaking at Passi Chally on October 1, 2026, during President Barrow's Meet the People Tour in the North Bank Region, Seyfo Cham said more people ventured into farming this year and crops are doing well.
"Minister of Agriculture, thank you for bringing enough fertilisers for farmers and on time. Tractors were distributed all over the country. So, today, you may say you do not know how to farm, but you cannot say you do not have the equipment to farm," he said.
"I am appealing to the President through the Minister of Agriculture. This year, a lot of people have ventured into farming and Alhamdulillah, the crops are very good and we are expecting a good harvest. But when the harvest starts, we want you to come to our aid and increase the price of groundnuts. Last year you did it, and this year we also want you to do it again," he said.
Seyfo Cham said traditional leaders in Niumi believe President Barrow remains the best person to lead the country.
"President Adama Barrow, what I want to tell you on behalf of the Seyfos is that we do not see anyone we can compare with you. We do not see anyone we believe can lead this country other than you," he said.
He said The Gambia's progress in peace and stability is indisputable, pointing to visible gains in roads, education, healthcare and agriculture. He urged Gambians to be politically discerning and not to be swayed by self-interest.
"What I want to tell Gambians is that we should not allow people to approach us solely in their own interests just to win our votes. Our political understanding should go beyond that stage," he said.
On rural electrification, he said the North Bank Region has recorded major expansion.
"When it comes to electricity, there are more than 300 villages in the North Bank Region, but the number of villages that do not have electricity is now fewer than 100. In Upper Niumi today, the number of villages without electricity is no more than six," he said.
Seyfo Cham called on citizens to reciprocate government's efforts with massive votes in December.
He assured President Barrow of strong support from Lower Niumi, Upper Niumi and Jokadu, noting that Alkalolu, youths and women are prepared for the December 5 presidential election.
"Even if you do not campaign here, we are ready for this political process. So, do not worry yourself too much about seeking votes here. Everything will become clear on December 5, when you will see for yourself what you have done for the people of Niumi," he said.
He said the main expectation is continuity and completion of outstanding road projects.
"All we are asking is that the foundation stone you have laid should be built upon. If you are re-elected, we want you to fulfil your promise to construct the remaining roads," he said.
