Following the conclusion of its mandate after years of interrogating crimes committed during former president Yahya Jammeh’s regime, the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) holds ex-president Yahya Jammeh responsible for a range of human rights violations during his 22 years rule.

During the aftermath of 1994 military takeover that claimed the lives of many innocents, the mass arrests of ex-ministers and political opponents, the Commission recommends the prosecution of the AFPRC Junta members, namely Yahya Jammeh, Sanna B. Sabally, Edward  Singhateh and Yankuba Touray for ordering the unlawful arrests, detention, and torture of OJ Jallow, MC Cham and the others held at Fajara Barracks.

On the planned countercoup of November 11, 1994, that was motivated by several reasons, the Commission also recommended the prosecution of Jammeh, saying all the members of the Junta: Yahya Jammeh, Sanna B. Sabally, Edward Singhateh and Yankuba Touray, and senior military officers who participated in November 11, 1994, tortures, be prosecuted as appropriate for the crimes they committed including the murders/unlawful killings, torture and inhumane and degrading treatment of the captured counter plotters.

The commission recommended the prosecution of Yahya Jammeh, Edward Singhateh, Yankuba Touray and Peter Singhateh for their  role in the premeditated murder of Ousman Koro Ceesay and also subverting the course of justice by covering up their crime.

On-road accidents committed by Jammeh’s convoy, the TRRC findings revealed that in all the accidents causing death, or serious injuries, the convoy drivers who caused the said accidents and incidents were never investigated, prosecuted, or held accountable for their actions.

The commission, therefore, recommends that members of the President’s and Vice Chairman’s Convoys, including former President Yahya Jammeh, be investigated and prosecuted for murder, manslaughter and other road traffic offenses committed by them.

On April 10 and 11 student demonstration, the commission also recommends the prosecution of Yahya Jammeh, former vice president Isatou Njie-Saidy, Baboucarr Jatta, Ousman Badjie, Abdou Giri Njie and Gorgui Mboob, while Corporal      Lamin Camara should be removed from office if he is currently employed and banned from holding any public office for five (5) years alongside Baboucarr Sowe and Momodou Ceesay.

On attacks of political opponents, the Commission recommends prosecuting Edward Singhatey and YankubaTouray for the torture and inhumane treatment of the UDP supporters at the Denton Bridge in September 1996 and as well take administrative and internal disciplinary measures against Superintendent Almami Manga for unlawfully detaining an infant and her mother without a court or other lawful order.
