Supporters of Sonko, the current mayor of Zinguinchor, the capital of Casamance, were alleged to have thrown stones at the security forces and burning tyres, while security officers were busy throwing tear gas – an incident that led to the death of a police officer.
The supporters were protesting against today’s trial involving Sonko on charges of rape. He has been accused of raping one Ajie Sarr at a salon in Dakar.
Two weeks ago he was facing trial of libel, defaming Mam Mbaye, the minister of Tourism who claimed 20.4 million dalasis. Sonko received six months suspended sentence, and he might be disqualified for the 25 February 2024 presidential elections if the Supreme Court confirms.
In a similar vein, arson attacks have been reported on the houses of three prominent Senegalese as presidential election approaches.
Farba Ngom, a member of Parliament of the ruling party, Cheikh Yerim Seck, a journalist and Serigne Mbaye Thiam, the minister of Natural Resources have got their houses burnt to ash by people believed to be oppositions.
The Senegalese oppositions are against President Macky Sall running for third term as president.
The country is expected to be tense today as Ousman Sonko, who is charged with rape is to appear before the court.
