Spain and The Gambia have pledged to deepen bilateral cooperation in security, migration, trade and economic development, as both countries seek to turn existing diplomatic commitments into practical benefits for their citizens.
The commitment was highlighted on Monday, October 12, during celebrations marking Spain’s National Day at the Ebunjan Theatre, where Spain’s Chargée d’Affaires in The Gambia, María Dolores Casariego Artola, and Foreign Affairs Minister Sering Modou Njie reaffirmed the importance of relations between the two countries.
Speaking at the event, Minister Njie described Spain as an important European partner, noting that bilateral relations gained momentum following high-level visits by Spanish officials in 2024 and the first bilateral political consultations held in Madrid on February 27, 2026.
He said the priority was now to translate agreements and commitments into concrete results that support national development and create opportunities for Gambians.
The minister expressed appreciation for Spain’s assistance in strengthening The Gambia’s maritime security, particularly through the donation of patrol boats and cooperation with Gambian security institutions.
He also acknowledged the work of Spain’s Guardia Civil alongside the Gambian Navy and Immigration Department in tackling human trafficking, migrant smuggling and dangerous irregular migration routes.
On migration, Njie welcomed progress under the Circular Migration Programme, through which the first Gambian workers departed for Spain in June 2025. He said the initiative demonstrated how cooperation could create legitimate employment opportunities while promoting skills development and shared prosperity.
He further identified tourism, fisheries, agriculture, renewable energy and private investment as areas with potential for expanded economic cooperation.
For her part, Ms Casariego Artola said Spain remained committed to its partnership with The Gambia, including support for development, institutional strengthening and migration management. She noted that nearly 40,000 Gambians live in Spain, describing the diaspora as an important link between the two countries. She added that about 1,800 Spaniards also live in The Gambia.
The Spanish diplomat said cooperation through Spain’s development agency and European Union-supported initiatives was helping strengthen institutions and address shared challenges.
She also highlighted the importance of democracy and respect for international law, expressing confidence that The Gambia’s December 5 presidential election would be peaceful, transparent and inclusive.
Ms Casariego Artola further reaffirmed Spain’s support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and its recognition of the State of Palestine in May 2024, saying lasting peace must be founded on international law and respect for human rights.
Both officials expressed confidence that continued dialogue and cooperation would strengthen relations between the two countries.
The celebrations also featured a cultural programme, including a performance by Spanish singer and songwriter Ima Serrano, reflecting the cultural links shared by the Gambian and Spanish peoples.
