Speaking to journalists after a closed-door meeting, Mr. Diouf revealed that discussions centred on the welfare of the Senegalese community in The Gambia, border challenges, and the implementation of The Gambia-Senegal bilateral agreement signed in 2024. The Vice President reaffirmed The Gambia's commitment to implementing the agreement and pledged continued cooperation between both nations.
The Secretary of State also used the occasion to shed light on Senegal's Spanish Migration Programme, which he personally oversees. He revealed that 84% of Senegalese nationals who travelled to Spain under the programme have since returned home, a development he described as a clear sign of the programme's success.
"This year, we are planning to send over 1,000 Senegalese to Spain, which means the programme is working," he stated, adding that Senegal is now prepared to work with Gambian authorities to extend the benefits of the programme to The Gambia. "We are ready to work with Gambian authorities to help them with that programme," Mr. Diouf affirmed.
The visit underscores the growing diplomatic and socio-economic ties between The Gambia and Senegal, with both nations reaffirming their commitment to addressing shared challenges and fostering closer cooperation in the areas of migration, border management, and community welfare.
