The Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Seedy S.K. Njie has been conferred with the prestigious ‘Africa Distinguished Young Achiever Award of Excellence’ by the All-Africa Students' Union (AASU).

The award, which was in recognition of his outstanding contributions to education, legislative reform and youth empowerment across the continent, was presented to him during a ceremony held at his office at the National Assembly in Banjul.

The honour was formally bestowed by Osisiogu Osikenyi E., President of AASU, who is leading a working visit to The Gambia aimed at strengthening ties with student leaders and key stakeholders.

AASU serves as the continental umbrella body representing more than 300 million students across Africa.

President Osikenyi led a delegation that included Amadou B. Jobarteh, Secretary for Press and Information of AASU, as well as representatives from the University of The Gambia and the University of Education in The Gambia.

The ceremony was also attended by several Members of the National Assembly, including the Majority Leader, who gathered to witness what was described as a significant moment of continental recognition for The Gambia’s legislature.

In his citation, Osikenyi commended the Deputy Speaker’s leadership and reform efforts.

“Rt. Hon. Seedy S.K. Njie, your achievements and strides as Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of The Gambia are a testament to your dedication to God, The Gambia and humanity. You have driven initiatives to improve access to quality education, eliminate barriers and enhance teacher training programmes; led efforts to integrate digital tools, enact the Information and Communications (Amendment) Act, and establish the National Computer Security and Incident Response Team (CSIRT); and emphasised the need for robust laws, media literacy and institutional readiness to counter information warfare and cyber threats. Your work has not only impacted The Gambia but has also inspired and motivated young Africans across the continent.”

He also extended warm congratulations to the Government and people of The Gambia on the occasion of the country’s 61st Independence Day celebrations.

In his acceptance remarks, Hon. Njie expressed gratitude to AASU for the honour, while reaffirming his commitment to public service and youth development.

“I am deeply humbled by this honour from the All-Africa Students’ Union, an institution that represents the hopes and aspirations of millions of young Africans. The work I do is intended to improve lives and advance the development of the people I serve through this Assembly, and Africa at large.”

He added: “Every initiative, every legislative effort and every partnership we pursue is guided by one simple question: will this make life better for our people? Whether it is improving access to education, strengthening our digital infrastructure or empowering our youth, the goal has always been service. This award strengthens my resolve to do even more.”

Thus, Deputy Speaker Njie pledged to continue working closely with his colleagues at the National Assembly, development partners and continental bodies such as AASU to advance education, good governance and youth empowerment in The Gambia and across Africa.

The Africa Distinguished Young Achiever Award of Excellence is conferred by AASU on exceptional young Africans, who demonstrate leadership, innovation and a strong commitment to the continent’s development.

Similarly, it also recognises contributions in education, governance, technology and community development.
