As widely anticipated by the press in recent days, Bassirou Diomaye Faye is expected to personally assume the presidency of Kiiraay, thus relinquishing his status as mere honorary president of the coalition that supported his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election. This choice marks a deliberate shift in his exercise of power, despite having aligned himself, upon assuming the presidency, with the doctrine of separating the presidential function from the leadership of a political party, even going so far as to resign from his position as Secretary General of Pastef.
The launch of Kiiraay comes amidst a climate of rapid realignment within the Senegalese political scene, marked by notable departures of key figures from both Pastef and the Alliance for the Republic (APR). The event is also being scrutinized as a test of loyalty for several ministers close to the president of the National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, including Déthié Fall, Moustapha Guirassy and Cheikh Tidiane Dièye, whose presence and possible membership in this new structure will be analyzed as an indicator of their positioning in the rivalry that now opposes the two heads of the executive.
