Heavy rains in Senegal have claimed lives, prompting President Bassirou Diomaye Faye to express condolences to the victims’ families and support for those affected by the flooding.

In a message shared on Facebook, President Faye said he was deeply saddened by the deaths linked to the recent downpours.

“It is with profound sorrow that I learned of the lives lost due to the recent heavy rains. I extend my sincere condolences to the mourning families and my support to all those impacted. I am closely monitoring the situation,” he said.

Faye said the government was fully mobilised to support affected communities and strengthen vigilance in areas considered vulnerable to flooding.

He also commended emergency responders on the ground: “I commend the dedication of the firefighters, state services, and volunteers,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, weather conditions calmed down this morning in Dakar after 48 hours of heavy rains that flooded the capital. However, the respite may be short-lived.

In a weather bulletin posted on Facebook, meteorologist Riad Kawar warned that conditions will become conducive to thunderstorms this afternoon, especially in the western and southern parts of the country.

He listed the regions of Thiès, Dakar, Diourbel, Fatick, Kaolack, Kaffrine, Tambacounda, Kédougou, Ziguinchor, Kolda, Sédhiou, Louga, and Saint-Louis as areas to watch.

Residents of Dakar, already hard-hit by the floods, are urged to remain vigilant.
