Sanna Manjang charged with murder of Deyda Hydara, others

Sanna Manjang was yesterday arraigned before Principal Magistrate Isatou Sallah-M’bai of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court and charged with the murder of Deyda Hydara, Ndongo Mboob and Haruna Jammeh.

Commissioner A. Sanneh, who represented the Inspector General of Police along with Deputy Commissioner Badjie and Manga, told the court that the charge against the accused was a capital offence, adding that the court does not have the jurisdiction to hear the case.

He therefore applied under Section 72 of the Criminal Procedure Code, 2024, to transfer the matter to the Special Criminal Division of the High Court in Banjul.  He urged the court to remand the accused at Mile 2 Prisons, pending the transfer of the case to the High Court.

Granting his application, the presiding magistrate told the court that she had gone through the charge sheet and further said that the court would transfer the case to the High Court by virtue of Section 72 of the Criminal procedure Code, 2025, as the court lacks jurisdiction to hear the case. She also stated that the accused would be remanded at Mile 2 Prisons, pending the transfer of the case to the Special Criminal Division of the High Court in Banjul.

It was the prosecution’s allegations that Sanna Manjang, sometime in the year, 2004, at Kanifing and diverse places, in the Republic of The Gambia, he, with malicious aforethought, caused the death of Deyda Hydara by shooting him with a gun.

It was also alleged that the accused, Sanna Manjang, sometime in the year, 2006, at Kanilai and diverse places, in the Republic of The Gambia, he, with malicious aforethought, caused the death of Ndongo Mboob by shooting him with a gun.

In the same year, 2006, he was alleged to have caused the death of Haruna Jammeh at Kanilai, with malicious aforethought, by shooting him with a gun.
