Fifty-six male inmates have walked free from the Mile Two State Central Prison after His Excellency, the President of the Republic of The Gambia, exercised his constitutional Prerogative of Mercy under Section 82 of the 1997 Constitution.

The mass pardon, announced by the Gambia Prison Service, underscores the President’s commitment to justice, rehabilitation, and reintegration. Officials described the move as a gesture of compassion, offering deserving inmates a second chance to rebuild their lives and contribute positively to society.

At the release ceremony, the Director General of the Gambia Prison Service expressed deep gratitude to the President for his leadership and compassion. He urged the pardoned individuals to serve as role models within their communities, reminding them that their transformation during incarceration must now be reflected in their actions.

“The inmates have undergone significant change during their time in prison. They must now demonstrate remorse through positive action, uphold the law, and make meaningful contributions to national development,” the Director General said.

The Gambia Prison Service reaffirmed its dedication to rehabilitation and reform, stressing that successful reintegration of offenders is central to building a safer and more responsible society.
