Parliamentary inquiry into the petroleum products of 36,953.641 metric tons valued at US$D30 million has granted Central Bank of The Gambia’s (CBG), request to hold its testimony behind closed doors.

Central Bank was to testify on Monday before the inquiry to tender evidence.

However, upon commencement, the co-chair of committee, Alhagie S. Darboe, informed the media that Central Bank had sent a request to the inquiry committee to grant them a closed-door testimony.

The governor of Central Bank, Buah Saidy, said having the testimony open will have certain implications on the reputation of the banks and their partners, adding “this is why we want to have off camera session to prevent sensitive public perception.”

Hon. Alagie S. Darboe, co-chair of the committee, highlighted that the request came late. However, he said it has been granted considering the content of the request.”

Our reporter later learned that the request was verbal and not a written statement.

Central Bank first appeared before the inquiry on 28 August 2024 in which the governor informed the committee that Central Bank of any economy is the stabilising factor, and as such they were proactive in the execution of their mandate in ensuring the stabilisation of the Gambian economy.

He said: "We are always on top of things. When we hear noise, we do act especially when it comes to the banking sector.”

This hearing was made open for the public.
