The complaint centres on remarks made by the Imam during Friday prayers, in which he reportedly stated that “anyone who goes to Magal in Touba and dies will end up in hell.”
The comments, perceived as deeply offensive by many, especially followers of the Mouride brotherhood, have ignited tensions both within The Gambia and beyond its borders.
After submitting their complaint, representatives of the Mouride community called on the authorities to take swift and appropriate action. They emphasised their right to practise their faith freely and without condemnation, urging national institutions to safeguard religious tolerance and mutual respect.
The incident has prompted calls for dialogue and mediation, with religious leaders and civil society groups warning that such inflammatory rhetoric could undermine peaceful coexistence and provoke sectarian unrest if left unaddressed.
