A mother wept outside the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court room yesterday as her son was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison without an option of a fine on two counts of conspiracy to commit felony contrary to Section 341 (a) and stealing contrary to Section 226 of the Criminal Offences Act, 2025, by Magistrate Manneh.

He was convicted along with two others, who should also serve two years in prison each for the two counts. They were ordered to pay D8,000 compensation to the complainant, in default to serve 6 months’  imprisonment. The sentence followed their plea of guilt.

In her judgement, the presiding magistrate told the court that the convicts did not waste the time of the court and pleaded guilty. She further stated that they were first-time offenders. She adduced that stealing is rampant nowadays. “The court should set an example to deter others from committing similar offences,” she told the court.

Earlier, Inspector Kebbeh, representing the Inspector General of Police, presented a charge sheet which indicated that Muhammeh Conteh, Musa Sowe and Abdourahman Sowe on or about the 2nd day of January, 2026, at Bakoteh, in the Kanifing Municipality of the Republic of The Gambia, within the jurisdiction of the honourable Court, conspired among themselves with the intention to commit a felony therein to wit stealing.

Prosecutors alleged that the convicts on the same day and place stole D15,000 being the property of one Sarjo Jallow.
