According to the release, the ministry is aware of the action being taken by a group of teachers in Region Two E who embarked on a sit-down strike on what they describe as unpaid double shift allowances which MOBSE claims has been resolved.
MOBSE responded that the allowance in question could not be referred as “double shift allowance″, refuting that the teachers’ concerned are not working under double shift system.
“It is important to note that the ministry remains committed to respecting the right and promoting the welfare of all teachers and will continue to support them in delivering quality education,” the release stated. “However, the ministry will not tolerate insubordination, especially from a small group under misleading name aimed at causing chaos within the system."
It further warns that the action of the teachers in question, particularly the team leaders, “will not be entertained” by the ministry, and will be followed with “necessary disciplinary measures” as required.
The statement adds: “The Gambia Government through the ministry and partners recognises teachers as critical stakeholders who will continue to be treated with respect.”
