The Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs’ delay to adjust the Personnel Emolument vote (PE) of the civil service for increment of allowances has been cited as the reason for not paying new allowances.

While updating lawmakers on the matter, the minister for Public Service, Administrative Reform, Policy Coordination and Delivery, Babucarr Bouy said his ministry was lately informed about this.

“To overcome the potential budgetary short fall created by this realisation, the Ministry of Finance recently engaged the Ministry of Public Service to identify possible savings on the 2024 PE votes in a bid to effecting payment of allowance increment.”

He added that they have done some analysis which they have shared with them and are awaiting their response.

“And from this analysis we know that it will be possible to make the necessary savings to be able to effect these payments in 2024.”

“It’s out of the realisation that both the transport and residential allowance is actually on the low side based on the cost of living that is why we embark on this proposal to revive it,” he declared.

The said proposal is to increase the residential allowance from 1,700 to 3000. And transport allowance from 1,500 to 2,500.
