Mambury Njie appointed Gambia's ambassador to Saudi Arabia

According to an official source, Mambury Njie, former minister of Finance and Economic Affairs has been appointed Gambia's ambassador to Saudi Arabia. He replaces Omar Gibril Sallah who was there for several years.

Mambury Njie is a seasoned economist and international affairs expert with over 30 years of experience across government, international diplomacy, and the private sector. He holds a Master’s degree in International Affairs with a concentration on Economic Policy Management from Columbia University, USA, and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Political Science from East Stroudsburg University, USA.

In his distinguished career, Mambury Njie has held several key positions in the Government of The Gambia. He has served as Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs (2010–2012, 2018–2022), Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Economic Planning and Industrial Development, and Minister of Higher Education. He also served as Secretary General and Head of the Civil Service, overseeing the country's public administration and acting as the principal adviser to the President. His leadership in these roles was marked by spearheading reforms such as the Public Finance Management reforms and the “Programme for Accelerated Growth & Development (PAGE).”

Mambury Njie’s diplomatic experience includes serving as The Gambia’s Ambassador to Taiwan, The Phillipines and the UAE, Ambassador at large, as well as Special Advisor to the President on Economic Affairs and Energy. In these capacities, he facilitated bilateral cooperation, secured international partnerships, and mobilized significant resources for national projects.

Currently, he is Special Advisor for Economic and Financial Integration and Partnerships at the ECOWAS Commission, advising on regional economic policies and fostering collaboration between member states and international organisations.

Mr. Njie also brings substantial private sector experience, having held leadership positions including CEO of the Social Security and Housing Finance Corporation, Managing Director of Gambia National Petroleum Corporation and Chairman of a commercial bank. His diverse expertise in economics, finance, and strategic leadership continues to shape development strategies across West Africa.
