Press release
The Gambia Trade Union Bureau (GAMTUB) has noted reports that the Justice for All Movement has called for a nationwide sit-down protest over economic hardships.
GAMTUB respects the constitutional right of citizens and workers to express their concerns. However, we regret the decision to pursue a nationwide protest while the Government is implementing measures to address inflation and the rising cost of living, in line with our May Day resolutions.
We acknowledge the challenges facing workers but believe that dialogue and constructive engagement remain the best way to address these concerns. A nationwide sit-down protest could disrupt economic activity and worsen existing hardships for workers, businesses, and the wider population.
As a representative of workers in The Gambia, GAMTUB cannot support and disassociate our organisation from the proposed action. We urge the Justice for All Movement to reconsider its position and engage with relevant authorities through peaceful and lawful channels.
Industrial action should be a last resort after all efforts at dialogue and negotiation have been exhausted. Maintaining industrial peace is essential for protecting jobs, supporting investment, and promoting economic stability.
GAMTUB remains committed to defending workers’ rights and welfare through responsible trade unionism, social dialogue, and cooperation with all stakeholders.
