Gambia Judiciary opens Legal Year 2026 on Sunday

The Judiciary of The Gambia has announced that the Official Opening of the Legal Year 2026 will be held on Sunday, 25 January at the Law Courts Complex in Banjul. The ceremony, approved by President Adama Barrow, will mark the start of the judicial calendar and bring together judges, lawyers, government officials, diplomats, and key stakeholders in the justice sector.

The Judiciary of The Gambia wishes to inform the general public that the Official Opening of the Legal Year 2026 will take place on Sunday, 25th January 2026 at the Law Courts Complex, Independence Drive, Banjul.

The ceremony, which marks the commencement of the Judicial Calendar for the year 2026, is being held with the approval of His Excellency, the President of the Republic of The Gambia. The event will bring together members of the Bench and Bar, representatives of the Executive and Legislature, development partners, members of the diplomatic corps, and other key stakeholders in the justice sector.

The Opening of the Legal Year will also usher in a week-long programme of activities aimed at strengthening the administration of justice. These activities include, among others: Official inauguration of the Special Criminal division of the High Court at Bakau Mile 7, Capacity-building and training programmes for Judges, Magistrates and members of the Gambia Bar Association, Stakeholder engagements, Judicial planning and administrative sessions; and activities designed to promote access to justice and judicial efficiency.

The Legal Year Opening provides an important opportunity for the Judiciary to reflection on its achievements in justice administration and to outline priorities for the year ahead.

The Judiciary under the leadership of the Honourable Chief Justice Hassan B. Jallow, extends an invitation to members of the legal profession, civil society organizations, development partners, stakeholders, the general public, and the media to this important national event.
