DG Ceesay made the remarks on the occasion of a public drug destruction exercise on Thursday 21st November 2024.
He said the agency remains firm in its stance against sub-standard behaviours and practices of all sorts. "Therefore, I enjoin you to always maintain high professional standards in your conduct and dealing with the public," he advised.
According to him, DLEAG has always prioritised implementation of a balanced approach in solving the drug menace. “As a result, our strategic initiatives have not always been primarily focused on supply suppression that is concerned with interdiction, prosecution and incarceration”.
"We have also been actively engaged in preventive drug demand reduction programmes and activities aimed at sensitising the public and fostering public support in the crusade on drugs," he explained.
Mr. Ceesay thanked all their development partners for the support that they have rendered to the DLEAG.
Samba Faal, the chairman of Drug Law Enforcement Agency The Gambia (DLEAG) board of governors, said that for the past several years, the agency developed and implemented strategic initiatives that contributed immediately in boosting the administrative, operational and technical capabilities of DLEAG for the fulfilment of its mandate and efficient attainment of the agency's organisational goals.
"I can assure you that we will leave no stone unturned in pursuing all avenues and engaging relevant stakeholders to advocate for the provision of essential resources that will enable us to effectively execute our functions to attain our collective vision for a drug free nation," he stated.
Further, he said DLEAG management has initiated attractive remuneration packages and incentives for staff to improve morale with a view to keeping standards high.
The chairman of DLEAG board of governors also revealed that there has been a significant improvement in the working conditions and general welfare of staff of DLEAG.
He noted that illicit drug trafficking and abuse continue to wreak havoc on individuals, families, societies, and nations across the globe, adding that millions of people across the globe particularly the youth have become addicted to drugs.
