The National Assembly yesterday passed the much debated Election Bill 2025, effectively doubling political party registration fees from D1 million to D2 million – a move critics warn could strangle smaller parties and silence alternative voices in The Gambia’s democracy.

The bill, tabled by Higher Education Minister Prof. Pierre Gomez on behalf of the Minister for Justice, was passed on Monday with 23 members voting in favor and 14 against after being read for the third time.

According to Prof. Gomez, the new Elections Act aims to repeal the outdated Elections Act, Cap. 3:01, and introduce a fresh legal framework designed to safeguard the “cardinal principles of free and fair elections” in The Gambia.

The bill outlines clearer procedures for publishing and analysing election results, placing greater responsibility on the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to ensure transparency. For the first time, the IEC Chairman will be mandated to provide detailed analysis of results during declarations, a measure the government argues will strengthen public trust in outcomes.

The passage of the Election Bill 2025 comes at a politically charged moment, as the country gears up for elections next year amid rising public skepticism about governance, accountability and transparency.
