Court convicts Gamtel manhole cover thieves

Magistrate P. Sowe of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court on 7 October 2024, convicted and sentenced three men for stealing Gamtel’s manhole cover. This followed their plea of guilt.

Ebrima Bah, Mustapha Kagbo and Musa Touray were sentenced to a fine of D20,000 each in default to serve two years in prison on conspiracy charge, and on a count of stealing, they were sentenced to a fine of D5,000 each in default to serve one year imprisonment.

According to prosecutors, on or about 4 October 2024, at Kanifing South, in the Kanifing Municipality of the Republic of The Gmabia, they conspired among themselves to commit a felony to wit: stealing. They were further alleged to have stolen a manhole cover valued at D42,000, being the property of Gamtel.

In reading the facts, the prosecuting officer, Corporal 5750 B. Jarra, told the court that the incident happened on 4 October 2024. He narrated that a passer-by who was riding a motorbike saw a manhole cover on top of a tricycle at Jimpex.  “He followed the driver of the tricycle and caught him and asked him where he got the manhole cover. The driver of the tricycle informed him that he was hired by the convicts. He then escorted the tricycle driver to the Kanifing Police Station. Investigation was done by the CID and the convicts were arrested and they confessed to stealing the manhole cover and sold it for D1,200,” he revealed to the court.
