The launch of the medical mission was marked by a ceremony at EFSTH, attended by Gambian health officials and representatives from the Chinese Embassy.
Tong Zhan, economic and commercial counsellor, who spoke on behalf of the Ambassador described the project as a milestone in the long-standing cooperation between the two nations. He stressed that healthcare has always been a key priority in Gambia–China relations, which date back to the 1970s.
Counsellor Tong further revealed that Chinese medical teams are currently deployed to other Gambian health facilities, including Bansang Hospital, Kiang Karantaba, and Kudang in the Central River Region.
He explained that this cataract surgery initiative followed discussions between President Adama Barrow and the governor of Heilongjiang Province, who agreed to deepen medical cooperation through practical interventions such as this project.
He also revealed that in 2025 alone, over 1,000 Gambians are being invited to China for training opportunities, with more than 150 of them coming from the health sector.
Dr. Yusupha Touray, permanent secretary at the Ministry of Health, commended the Chinese government and the embassy for the initiative, describing it as timely support for The Gambia’s health sector.
He expressed optimism that the two-week programme would yield tangible results and improve the quality of life for beneficiaries.
Echoing this sentiment, Pa Modou Sam Colley, principal ophthalmic medical assistant at EFSTH, underscored the significance of the partnership, highlighting its impact on strengthening eye health services and advancing surgical excellence in the country.
He urged his colleagues to embrace the opportunity for mutual learning and collaboration, which, he said, reflects a broader spirit of global cooperation in promoting health and healing.
