Bread price increases to D12 per loaf July 1, 2025

The Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment (MOTIE) wishes to inform the general public that the Government of The Gambia through this Ministry continues to monitor the production, distribution and selling of bread in the country.

The objective is to ensure that bread as an essential food commodity, is available and accessible by the population.

It could be recalled that the Ministry issued a press release in May 2025 informing the general public that the price of bread in the Country remains at D10 per loaf while Government continues to negotiate with The Gambia Bakers Union (GBU) to review the input cost of bread production.

Following the collection of inputs on the cost structure of bread production from bakeries across Country, the Ministry, the Bakers Union, Gambia Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (GCCPC) and the Consumer Consortium convened meetings on the 27th and 28th May 2025 to further negotiate on the price, weight and the quality of bread taking into consideration the concerns of both the bakeries and consumers.

In this meeting, all parties agreed on the following:

  1. Average weight of ‘Senfur’ will increase from 133g to 160 grams and its price will increase from D10 to D12.
  2. Average weight of ‘Tapalapa’ will also increase from 165g to 190g and its price will increase from D10 to D12.

As such, the general public is hereby informed that effective 1st July 2025, the price of ‘Senfur’ will be D12 for a 160g loaf andTapalapa’ will also be D12 for a 190g loaf across the country.

The Ministry also wishes to inform consumers and users of bread that bread will be available for sale at the bakeries at D10 per loaf and D120 per dozen.

The Ministry will continue to monitor and engage stakeholders in the value chain for amicable and lasting solutions considering the wider interests of the public. The Ministry therefore urges all stakeholders to comply with the agreed weights and prices for the Senfur and Tapalapa bread to the letter.

The Ministry through its Legal Metrology Department under the Gambia Standard Bureau will also monitor compliance with the agreed weights and will educate the general public on how to determine the weight of fresh bread. Anyone found making bread below these agreed weights will be in violation of this agreement and shall be dealt with accordingly.
