The Gambian leader President Adama Barrow yesterday received members of the Gambia Mandinka Society (GMS) on a courtesy visit at the State House in Banjul.

The purpose of the visit was to express their strong support and solidarity with the President and his development agenda, commending him for upholding peace and harmony, respecting democratic principles, and enhancing infrastructural development across the country.

President Barrow expressed delight upon receiving members of the GMS and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to promoting peace and harmonious cooperation within the country. In advancing food self-sufficiency, H.E. assured his government’s efforts in introducing a system where farmers will own agricultural tractors through 25% deposit and 50% in instalment for a period of four years, with the government paying the remaining 25% of the price.

Speaking on behalf of the team, Alagie Sambujang Conteh, the Vice President of GMS, extended gratitude to the President for the improved infrastructural development, specifically in the rural parts of the country. He further assured the President of their support and willingness to stand behind him to help advance his vision and goals. He commended the President for providing them with the opportunity to share the same platform.

Imam Yankuba Sillah highlighted the establishment's brief background, dating back to 1970 when it initially started as ‘Kanbeng Kafo’ to collectively aid its members during challenges.

It later joined the incumbent government to support its development agenda. He further underscored the significance for President Barrow and his government to address issues surrounding cyberbullying targeting high-profile individuals, which could incite violence and jeopardise the existing peace in the country.

President Barrow said that Gambians should be aware of the new laws surrounding insults, which would be implemented in due course. He concluded with a reminder that peace is a collective responsibility, and more effective when every citizen embraces it.
