Speaking on a high-level panel of trade and investment ministers, diplomats, and energy experts in the South African city of Sandton, the ambassador said The Gambia has the right combination of resources - water, wind and abundant sunshine - to become a competitive producer and exporter of green hydrogen. She noted that with the right strategic partnerships, The Gambia could rival South Africa and other global players already advancing large-scale hydrogen projects.
Ambassador FJC emphasised that The Gambia’s coastline offers a natural gateway for export to Europe and Asia, making it a strategic location for international investors. She stressed that transforming infrastructure into commercial-scale green hydrogen production would position The Gambia as a major hub for the entire ECOWAS region.
“The Gambia is committed to clean energy and international cooperation,” she said, noting that under President Adama Barrow’s administration, significant progress has already been made in renewable energy adoption. She cited the 23MW Jambur solar and battery project launched in 2024, the ongoing 150MW Soma Solar Farm supported by the World Bank and ECOWAS, and a $52.6 million investment in rural electrification and solar lighting.
She also pointed to the ECOWAS Green Hydrogen Policy Framework adopted in 2023, which sets a target of producing 10 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2050. The framework includes harmonised policies, special economic zones, and fiscal incentives designed to attract private sector investment.
From a regional perspective, Ambassador FJC calls for greater infrastructural integration across African states to make cross-border hydrogen trade feasible. She argues that collective action by African governments would strengthen the continent’s ability to present viable hydrogen projects to international investors.
The forum - attended by senior government officials, special advisors to the President of South Africa, diplomats, business executives, environmentalists, climate strategists, and technology experts - served as a platform to explore investment opportunities in sustainable energy. It brought together actors from industries such as manufacturing, research and innovation, and green e-fuels.
Ambassador FJC assures investors that The Gambia is ready to partner with the global community to unlock the potential of green hydrogen and accelerate Africa’s transition to clean energy.
