The need to maintain stability!

Dec 29, 2022, 12:04 PM | Article By: EDITORIAL

British novelist, Nicholas Cornwell better known by his pen name Nick Harkaway, has once stated that peace is not a state - it is a choice and one has to remake it every day. This in a nutshell underscores the importance of peace and stability.

Peace and stability are mentioned not just for sake of mere fantasy but they are uttered for a reason.

What is happening in the country at the moment leaves much to be desired.

In this present day Gambia, we need peace and stability more than ever.

It is in the news that President Barrow has preached the need to maintain unity and stability in the country.

The Gambian leader was speaking on Tuesday at the opening event of the first ever congress of the National People’s Party (NPP) on Tuesday at S.D.K. Jawara Conference Centre.

We all know the Gambia is recovering from more than 20 years of brutal dictatorship and as such there needs to be that state of focus and collective mobilisation of efforts to advance among the community of nations. The Gambian underwent horror and sad experiences in the past two years and let's not give chance for that to repeat itself.

Therefore, we need more peace and stability than even gold and diamonds. With the latter, the country can achieve greatness once there is life. As citizens we have to be committed and focus to ensure our nation achieves these goals.

The time for us to work collectively is now, and do away with hate, extremism, religious divides, tribalism and insults that pose threats to our unity and stability.

Let's put aside our differences and see the interest of the nation first. It is a fact that nobody will come from outside to develop the country for us. We have to be drivers of our own destiny and we cannot achieve that amid disunity and violence.

It is not going to be an easy road but with commitment and dedication we can sure prevail among nations.

Let us, individually and collectively, work for the good for the nation and see ourselves as people destined to live together.

Division and disunity would take us nowhere but only backward and underdeveloped.
