Patriotism and fighting corruption!

Sep 3, 2025, 11:29 AM

A renowned American lawyer cum politician, William Jennings Bryan once stated that the essence of patriotism lies in a willingness to sacrifice for one’s country, just as true greatness finds expression, not in blessings enjoyed, but in good bestowed. It also entails abstaining from acts that has the tendency to retard country’s development, while weakening its economy.

Therefore, as citizens we should collectively work towards embracing patriotic values to develop the country.

Let’s always bear in mind that Rome was not built in a day.  Sequel to the adage, it was built by none but the Romans. We have a great task to join our efforts in building a nation.

Embracing patriotic values are fundamental elements that are required for rapid socio-economic development.

The minister for Finance and Economic Affairs, Hon. Seedy Keita, recently unveiled a sweeping list of alleged corruption, fraud, and abuse-of-office cases that cuts across the heart of public service.

Minister Keita made this disclosure during a presser hosted by the Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services in response to three petitions submitted by Gambians Against Looted Assets (GALA).

As citizens we should always reflect on this famous phrase by ex- US Statesman- John F. Kennedy ‘ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.’

Every patriotic citizen has a role to play in national development. The recent alleged corruption scandals, which according to the Minister cuts across the heart of public service, is not only worrying but a matter of serious concern.

There should be an urgent national discourse on the issue. Yes, government is not sweeping these matters under the carpet. But the slow pace of government’s action in introducing punitive measures to curb the menace and serve as deterrent, is giving rise for the menace to continue without any end in sight.

Corruption weakens every economy and tears the fabric of society. It is a cankerworm that should be tackled head on.

The most annoying part is that most of these alleged corruption involves senior government officials, who many look up to. Now, when people of such caliber are involved in corruption and other acts that have the tendency to weaken our economy, what are telling the junior officials?

Government should leave no stone unturned in making sure that those found wanting are prosecuted without delay.

It is a fact that if authorities turn blind eyes to some of these corrupt practices, the menace will continue repeating itself.  It is high time we address this issue once and for all. It is said that this kind of high-profile corruption practices can only happen in the Gambia and people roam the streets.

In some countries like China and Indonesia, the punishment for corruption is death. That is why is it quite rare to hear reports of high-profile corruption in these countries.

As Gambians, let’s all embrace patriotic values and shun acts that will derail our economy, thus retarding our progress.
