Let’s act against violent crime!

Oct 6, 2023, 12:08 PM

The recent increase in the number of violent crimes in the country has left many in disbelief.

Certainly, the recent surge in crime has left tongues-wagging over the faith of security in the country. It’s always scary and worrying over the alarming rate of crime in the country. No soul should be taken just like that as every soul is precious.

It is true that once people live together, they are bound to have some form or argument here and there. But that is where maturity comes into play. As human beings, God created us for us to love each other. And people should always learn how to control their emotions and temper.

Just recently, two serving personnel of The Gambia Police Force were shot dead and investigation into that brutal attack has since begun.

In yesterday's edition, we reported that The Gambia Police Force has confirmed the arrest of a suspect in the stabbing incident that led to the tragic death of one Kebba Ndoye, a resident of Banjul, on 04 October, by Senegalese authorities. He is awaiting extradition to face justice in The Gambia.

According to Police preliminary investigations, the alleged suspect fatally stabbed the victim before fleeing the jurisdiction of Banjul. However, the recent arrest of the alleged suspect is a clear indication that the world these days is becoming more interconnected.

We must also bear in mind that guaranteeing the safety and security of citizens is paramount for any development to take effect. It makes no sense for a government to brag about a development initiative, if it fails to guarantee the safety of its people.

Experts argue that peace is not merely the absence of war, but the presence of justice, law and order. And the government cannot promote law, order and justice for all unless it is built upon a strong moral and legal foundation.

We therefore commend the Police High Command for their pragmatic and swift response to events which indeed paid dividends. The arrest of the suspect in Senegal is a perfect reminder that countries are slowly, but surely closing their borders to criminals. The recent stabbing incident in Banjul has indeed sent shock waves throughout.

To the police, let them stay vigilant and ensure a safer society for the citizens. The Gambia globally has been known for its peace and openness of its citizens. However, that open door policy should not be taken for granted. We must jealously safeguard and protect the peace we have been known for.

Together we can build a better society.
