One Mustapha Demba, a woodcarver, yesterday testified in the drug case involving one Essa Maiga, who was alleged to have been in possession of prohibited drug before the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court.

Demba told the court he is a woodcarver and that he knew the accused person.

He said that on 1 April 2012, he was at home with a friend brewing china green tea (ataya) when the accused appeared in front of them with a bag and approached him that he had something for him (the witness).

According to him, he did not know the content of the bag and suddenly police officers arrived at the scene and got hold of them.

He said the police opened the bag and found some parcels of suspected cannabis covered with cement papers, adding that both of them were handcuffed and they asked the accused person the owner of the said cannabis, to which the accused admitted owning the said cannabis.

He said the handcuff was removed from him and was later called to the station where a statement was obtained from him.

Hearing continues on 11 September 2012.
