As
the country faces political upheaval with protest upon protest, the Center for
Victims and Human Rights Violations (Victims’ Center) yesterday revealed their
plan to protest on 23 January 2020, after police had granted APRC a permit.
The
Victims’ Center had been tirelessly calling on the police not to grant the
permit to APRC, which yesterday protested demanding former president Yahya
Jammeh’s return. This protest, however, has disappointed the Victims’ Centre
and equally requested permit for a counter protest.
Isatou
Jammeh, a relative to former President Jammeh and staff of the Victims’ Center,
said; “we have sent out a permit to stage a protest in collaboration with all
our partners and the victims to show solidarity.”
She
indicated that the protest is planned for 23 January in Banjul, from the Arch
22 to the police headquarters.
“We
are calling everyone to come and take part because it is a national call. We
are calling everyone to come and make it a massive one, so that we can condemn
the approval of the police for issuing protest permit to APRC,” she added in
released audio.
She
further called on all victims and their families to come out in their numbers
to join them; adding: “we feel that the police’s decision is a mockery to the
Victims’ Center.”
She
said the protest will start at 10 a.m.
