Women representatives from one hundred and thirty-five villages in Upper Fulladu West district in the Central River Region North, took part recently in a by-election to elect a new lady councillor.
Held at the governor’s bantaba in Janjanbureh, the election was conducted after the death of the area lady councillor, the late Sally Baldeh, who died four months ago.
The two candidates who contested for the position were Hawa Jammeh and Nyoka Suwareh, both from Bansang.
Prior to the election, the candidates were given three weeks to engage the electorate in the area in consultative dialogue and campaign.
Both Hawa and Nyoka were said to be APRC militants.
At the end of the election, Nyoka Suwareh was declared winner with 266 votes out of a total of 349 votes cast. The results were declared by Alhagie Kekuta Ceesay.
