The celebration took the form of a march-past from Pipeline Mosque to KMC chambers and the theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Moving from culture of reaction to the culture of prevention.’
UDYD chairman Baboucarr Kebbeh said his association is really proud to be associated with Kanifing Municipality, adding that the UDYD was formed in 2008 to empower the youth.
Kebbeh applauded all those who attended the five-year anniversary celebration, noting that the association has been contributing towards the youth since its inception five years ago and their progammes cover Greater Banjul Area, West Coast Region and North Bank Region, with extension programmes to LRR, CRR and URR.
Deputizing the Mayor of Kanifing Municipality, Tapha Saine said it is very good to have organizations that will nurture the youth and culture of The Gambia.
While urging them to nurture peace and tolerance, Saine challenged the UGYD to extend their programmes to other parts of the country, adding that the youth are the leaders of tomorrow.
According to Saine, they are really proud to be associated with the UGYD in their efforts to promote youth activities in the country.
Sports coordinator of Kanifing Municipal Council, Tahirou Sonko, said the slogan of the Ministry of Youth and Sports is to promote excellence in sport.
Sonko also urged the UGYD to embark on cleansing exercise as well as disaster management in the country.
Rosaline Secka, a representative from the National Youth Council, urged members of the UGYD to be dedicated and committed and always contribute towards the development of the association.
Secka also called for attitudinal change from UGYD members, saying they should always work towards the success of the association.
UGYD Secretary General Baboucarr Jallow, who said the association was formed in 2005, disclosed that the 5th anniversary celebration was dedicated to the Minister of Presidential Affairs, Secretary General and Head of the Civil Service, Momodou Sabally, for his contribution towards the development of the association.
