Two Market Women Convicted

Sainabou Joof, Sainabou Sanyang, Ndey Joof and Kumba Bah, Serekunda market vendors were on 26th February 2009 arraigned before Senior Magistrate Abdoulie Mbackeh of the Kanifing Magistrates' Court for alleged affray.

Sainabou Joof and Ndey Joof pleaded not guilty while Sainabou Sanyang and Kumba Bah pleaded guilty.

According to count one of the charge sheet, Sainabou Joof and Sainabou Sanyang on 18th February 2009, at Serekunda Market fought at a public place.

Count two, stated that Ndey Joof unlawfully assaulted Sainabou Sanyang on the same day and place.

While count three, went on to reveal that Kumba Bah and Ndey Joof fought on the same day and place.

After the narration of the facts of the case by the police prosecutor Inspector Mariama Fatty for Sainabou Sanyang and Kumba Bah, who had pleaded guilty, the accused begged the court to temper justice with mercy.

Magistrate Mbackeh then convicted and sentenced them to be bound over to keep the peace for a period of three months.

Sainabou Joof and Ndey Joof who denied the charges were granted court bail on the deposition of D500 each or the provision of one Gambian surety.

The case was adjourned until 11th March 2009.
