The annual Sports Award Night organized by the Sports Journalists’ Association of The Gambia (SJAG) is meant to recognize and reward past and present sports personalities, and is an initiative worth supporting by every Gambian.

The fundamental mission of the association is to enhance the development of sports journalism in The Gambia to the highest level possible.

The association has been staging the event for the past five years, and the 6th Award Night is schedule to take place on the 10th April 2015 at the Kairaba Beach Hotel.

It is, therefore, important and befitting for all Gambians to come on board and be part of this event as we want to celebrate our own countrymen and women who immensely contributed to sports development in the past and present. It is high time we are seen celebrating our own athletes in a different style.

This year’s ceremony, which is expected to be graced by prominent personalities from within and outside the country, will witness the 1985 Zone II squad of both The Gambia and Senegal being awarded by the sports journalists in recognition and appreciation of their good work. We will also be celebrating The Gambia’s very own African Referee of the Year, Bakary Papa Gassama.

This is a national event that The Gambia and every patriotic Gambian should be seen actively contributing toward making it a successful one, and the association is calling on public and private institutions to join in staging the event. The award committee chaired by the association’s acting president Musa Sise is working day in day out to stage a memorable event.

The different categories for this year’s award ceremony are: Sports Personality of The Year Award, Best Local Based Athlete 2014, Best Foreign Based Athlete 2014, Best Coach of the Year 2014, Best Team of the Year 2014, Institution in Support of Sports, and Best Referee of The Year 2014.

Sports Journalists from Senegal are also going to join in celebrating The Gambia’s fantastic present and past sports men and women.
