NBR schools boosted with educational materials, sporting kits

Eighteen nursery, primary, basic cycle and senior secondary schools in the North Bank Region last Wednesday received at least 4,000 library text books, toys, sporting materials and science equipment worth thousands of dalasis.

The items were donated by Gareth Oliver, who goes by the Gambian name Omar Ceesay, a volunteer attached to Regional Education Directorate in Region 3, with support from Ysgol Y Gwendraeth Comprehensive School in Wales, Swansea City Football Club, and Tim Robinson.

The presentation ceremony was held at the Regional Education Directorate in Kerewan, North Bank Region.

Speaking on the occasion, Omar Ceesay said the donated materials were meant to support and enhance the Ministry of Basic and Secondary  Education’s drive to attain quality teaching and learning in schools.

He thanked the ministry for offering to transport the donated materials to the various schools that benefited from the donation.

Bai Jawara, principal of Kerewan Senior Secondary School, one of the beneficiary schools, hailed the donors for their support.

He said the donated science equipment, specifically would go a long way in strengthening the capacity of his school’s science laboratory and would encourage more students to go in for the sciences.

Mr Jawara assured the donors that the donated materials would be optimally utilised.

The beneficiary schools were Kerewan Basic Cycle, Kerr Alhagie Malick Lower Basic School, Kerewan Senior Secondary School, Suwareh Kunda Nursery School, Saliekene Senior Secondary School, Samba Chargie Lower Basic School, Salikenne Lower Basic School, Berending Senior Secondary School, Maria Lower Basic School, Aja Fatou Bojang Upper Basic and Senior Secondary School, Medina Serign Mass Upper Basic and Senior Secondary School, Kerr Demba Holleh Lower Basic School, Fass Upper Basic School, Ngain Sanjal Upper Basic and Senior Secondary School, Mbulum Ahmadiya Upper Basic and Senior Secondary School, Essau Senior Secondary School, St Matthews Lower Basic School, and Barra Upper Basic School.
