The chairman of Super Nawetan Organising Committee (SNOC), Lamin Camara, who doubles as the chairman of the Gambia Referee Association, has challenged the Gambia Football Federation (GFF) to stop all first division players from competing in Super Nawetan.
Mr Camara made this remark at the National Football Consultative forum organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Sports Council held at the Friendship Hotel at the Independence Stadium in Bakau on Saturday.
Mr Camara revealed that when he was elected as the president of Lamin Sports Committee few years ago he decided to stop all first and second division players from playing Nawetan in Lamin, adding that Lamin were to gain promotion to the second division and also won the Super Nawetan in 2011 after beating Sukuta 2-0 in the final played at the Independence Stadium.
Mr Camara stated that Super Nawetan started in the late 80s by teams from the Greater Banjul area and later by eight zones, namely Banjul, Bakau, Brikama, Serrekunda East and Serrekunda West, Sukuta, Lamin and Gunjur, noting that the zones were increased to eleven in 2012 when Brufut, Serrekunda Central and Manjai were recognised by the Gambia Football Federation.
Mr Camara further stated that Super Nawetan attracts large crowd and generates enough funds for the zones and the organising committees, and GFF first and second division teams use it to scout good players for their respectively teams.
Mr Camara urged the GFF to support Super Nawetan in a bid to scout good players for The Gambia.
