S/K West Mini-Stadium to host 2013 lower basic athletics

The Desk Officer of Sports and President of the Lower Basic (Primary) School Sport Association, Mr. Musa Mendy has revealed that this year’s inter-Regional Lower Basic School’s independent sports athletics championship will be held at Serekunda West Mini- Stadium, due to the ongoing rehabilitation at the Independent Stadium.

According to Mr. Mendy, this year’s championship will be the 5th edition of its kind. “Each region are to produce forty (40) athletes and five (5) officials and for their camping, Regions three to six will be camped at Friendship Hostel, starting from 16th to 19th February 2013,” Mr. Mendy told pressmen at the conference room of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE) .

Mr. Mendy, who thanked GNOC boss, Mr. Modou Dibba for sponsoring three athletes from 2012 Athletics Championship, said Region Two is currently on camping at GFA Gold Project at Old Yundum.

Also speaking to the pressmen was Mr. Momodou Bah, the Acting Principal Assistant Secretary MoBSE, who is in charge of this year’s Lower Basic School Athletics Championship logistic. He said the outstanding athletes will be given a scholarship by MoBSE. “If you look at the Lower Basic school’s championship it was always problem free unlike other school events and am also thanking Mr. Modou Dibba for being the only institution in the country so far in sponsoring Lower Basic School through athletics,” he said.

The GNOC sponsors athletes are as follows: Abdou Badjie from Busura Lower Basic school in Region Two in West Coast Region as best Junior boy runner, Sainabou Ceesay from Sitanunku Basic Cycle school in Region three of North Bank Region as best junior girl runner and Awa Jallow from Kerr Pateh also in Region three as best Senior runner

It would be recalled that last year’s championship were won by Region Two with first position- 308 points, Region Three second position with 273 points, Region 6 Third Position with 235 points, Region 5 forth position with 195 points, Region 1 fifth position, with 189 points and Region 4 sixth position with 186 points, respectively.
