Six judges expected in Gambia at weekend for Supreme Court cases

Judicial sources have confirmed that five judges from Nigeria and one from Sierra Leone, who were appointed in September 2016, are expected in Banjul at the weekend.

Our sources confirmed that Justice Habeeb A.O Abiri, Justice Abubakarr Datti Yahaya, Justice Abubakar Tijani, Justice Obande Festus and Justice Emmanuel Akomaye Agim are the five Nigerian Judges, and Justice Nicholas Colin Brown from Sierra Leone, are expected to sit at the Supreme Court from 9 to 19 January 2017.

Judicial sources further revealed that these judges were supposed to sit in November 2016, but the sitting was postponed to January 2017 due to the political atmosphere at the time, as the political parties and the people were engaged in political campaigns.

Cases slated for January 9 to 19 include: SC Criminal Appeal number 4/2015 Khaddy Bojang (Represented by A.N.M.O. Darboe) and the State (D.P.P.)

SC Criminal Appeal 5/2014. Bakary Kanyi (Represented by L.K. Mboge) and the State (D.P.P)

SC Criminal Appeal 7/2014 Yankuba Camara (Represented by A.N.M.O Darboe) and the State (D.P.P.)

SC Crimimal Appeal 8/ 2014 Lang Dibba (Represented by L.K. Mboge) and the State (D.P.P).

SC Criminal Appeal 11/2014 Joseph Wowo (Represented by U. Achigbue) and the State (D.P.P.)

The civil appeals are SC CA 009/2013. Mustapha Jadama (Represented by A.N.M.O.Darboe) and Jerreh Fadera and Gambia Telecommunications Co. Ltd (Represented by A.N.D. Bensouda)

SC CA 016/2013. Pa Abdoulie Manneh (Represented by B.S.Touray and Geoffrey Renner (as liquidator for Slok Air)

SC CA 004/2013. Sheriff Singhateh & Deede Jaiteh and Mike Gentles (suing by his Attorney Abdulai Sissoho & Peter Pan House Project) (Represented by A.N.D. Bensouda)

Election Petition SC 001/2017 Yahya A.J.J.Jammeh Sheikh Professor, Alhaji, Dr.(Represented by E.A. Gomez) and Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), The Returning Officer (IEC), Adama Barrow, and the Attorney General of The Gambia.

Election Petition SC 002/2017 Yankuba Colley (suing for and on behalf of five thousand, three hundred and thirty voters) (Represented by E.A. Gomez.) and Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), The Returning Officer (IEC), Adama Barrow, and the Attorney General of The Gambia.

The civil review cases are SC Civil Appeal 15/2012.  Isatou Secka (Represented by S.M. Tambadou) and Susan Badjie (Reprsented by I.D Drammeh)

SC Civil Appeal 4/2009. Mohammed Manjang (as personal representative of the late Alh Bora Manjang) (Represented by I.D. Drammeh) and Ousman Semega-Janneh & 8 others (Represented by A.ND. Bensouda).

It would be recalled that the Supreme Court of The Gambia last held a sitting in May 2015.
