A Senegalese national, Muhammed Sarr, was recently convicted and sentenced to a fine of D25,000 in default to serve 18 months in prison.

The sentence was administered by Magistrate Tabally of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court following the convict’s own plea of guilty to a charge of theft.

Sarr was also ordered to compensate the complainant with D10,000.

The charge sheet as presented by the prosecution revealed that Sarr, on 28 October 2010, at Fajara in the Kanifing Municipality, stole from the shop of one Muhammed Fatty two mobile phones marked Samsung and Black berry each valued at D20,000 and a cash of D7,700, amounting to a total value of D47,700, being the property of the said Muhammed Fatty.

Magistrate Tabally later ordered the recovered items be returned to the owner and further ordered the convicted person to be deported immediately upon completion of his sentence.
