Scorpions Leapfrog Opposition

Jan 15, 2009, 5:18 AM

Congratulations to everyone involved with the Scorpions who have jumped a whopping 13 places in the latest FIFA world rankings. This is among the biggest jumps of any nation in the world and shows clearly that we are entering a glory age for Gambian football. The current coaching staff are doing an excellent job and have been supported in this not only by the president himself but by the private sector especially Africell.

All involved with Gambian football must now redouble their efforts to ensure that this momentum is not lost and that we continue our ascent in the rankings.

It is however disappointing to think how close we are to an even bigger jump. If we had qualified following our match against Senegal there is no telling what rank we would be enjoying to today. Our neighbours are ranked 50thin the world but at 75thin the world we are fast gaining ground on them.

We are now ranked 18thin Africa. For a nation of our size this is truly extraordinary. If we continue to work hard we may even end up being number one. We not only congratulate all those currently involved in Gambian football but also all those who have worked so tirelessly through the years to bring our soccer to the point it is now. Finally we urge all young footballers to use this ranking as a source of inspiration and strive to emulate The Scorpions in their achievements in the coming years. The future is indeed bright for Gambian football.
